Best 10 PLG tools you need for 2022

by Frederic Melanson in

Why do you need PLG tools?

I won't answer that question, because you're here already. Let not waste your time with long intros and let's get to what you came for.

😵‍💫 There are too many tools for Product-Led Growth on the market and you don't know which ones to use for specific use cases for your business.

😒 Resources out there give lists of tools (for SEO purposes), but don't go into details or show concrete examples, which is what you actually need to make a decision.

This article recommends to best go-to-market tech stack for Product-Led Growth for your SaaS company, based on your stage and concrete use cases.

I personally reviewed all these tools for you and I will share my insight on each one of them, so you can build the ultimate plg tech stack.

🪂 Let's dive in, shall we?

Your plg tech stack shouldn't be the same if you have 300 signups per week or 30,000 sign-ups per week.

So it's kinda stupid (pardon my french) for other articles to just give you a "one-size-fits-all" list.

For the sake of simplicity, we'll split our recommendations into 2 categories:

🌱 Best PLG tools for SMBs

✔️ From $0 to $1MM in monthly recurring revenue.

✔️ Idea stage to series C.

🌲 Product-Led Growth GTM tech stack for the enterprise.

✔️ More than $1MM in monthly recurring revenue.

✔️ Series C and up.

🪴 What about mid-market?

Well, a mid-market plg company can be a fit for both tech stacks, so it's up to you to decide what makes the most sense for your plg strategy.

For example, using a customer data platform (Segment, SMB) or data warehouse (Snowflake, enterprise).

3. Segment

Category: Data management

What it'll do for you

Segment has been the go-to solution for companies large and small to start collecting data since it’s easy to implement and you can get started without a “conversation with sales”.

With Segment, you'll be able to easily send data from your websites and products to any of your tools.

It won't seem as no surprise that Segment is a must for product-led growth companies, because you need data to build your ideal customer journey, and without Segment, your developers will have way too much work on their hands.

Key features

Connections is the basic Segment features, it's what allow you to sync data from sources (your website or product) to destinations (your tools).

Standardize your data with Protocols. It's a very powerful aspect of Segment. Being able to correctly identify your data so it's always named the same is a game-changer for PLG.

If you don't do it, you'll quickly get stuck in a sea of bad data that you can't use.

Check out this great resource for data naming.

Finally, Personas facilitate the creation of real-time audience segmentation, which helps companies build start-of-the-art digital experiences.

Plug-and-play

Segment enables plug-and-play! Nothing much to add here 🤷‍♀️

Price

You can get Segment for free but you'll hit paywalls pretty fast.

Paid plans start at $120/mo and scale up as you get more than 10,000 visitors/mo.

For what you'll save in developers' time, it's a steal!

4. Mixpanel

Category: Product analytics

What it'll do for you

With 9 trillion user actions per year, Mixpanel is an industry favourite. It helps all teams at product-led growth companies understand what people do in their products and uncover key insights to retain more users.

Key features

Dive into the depths of analyzing user behaviour with Mixpanel’s powerful, interactive reports.

Our favourite part of Mixpanel isn't a feature, it's the ease of use. Dashboards are really easy to understand and user-friendly.

The only hiccup is that dashboards are not the best way for GTM teams to turn usage data into actions, so combining a tool like Mixpanel with a product-led sales platform like Bliinx is very powerful.

Plug-and-play

Mixpanel is one of the most integration-friendly product analytics tools. It plugs and plays with almost 100 products.

Price

Mixpanel has a free plan with access to a very limited number of features. Paid plans start from $25 a month.

From Amir Movafaghi, Founder & CEO of Mixpanel:

"10 years ago, a massive wave of disruption happened in the B2C world. It happened fast thanks to cloud computing and tech products shipping and iterating at an unprecedented rate. For a while, enterprise software was isolated because the buying journey was more complicated. But things are changing and end users have far more influence on buying decisions and this is the fuel behind PLG. Enterprise now has to live with the same truth that consumer products have had to deal with for years, build things that people actually want to use. The first cohort of tech giants that are built on PLG are proof that this is a real shift in enterprise and it's here to stay."

8. Lemlist

Category: Lead engagement

What it'll do for you

Lemlist got to $10MM in ARR even though they came to market after competitors had raised millions.

You can also go way past emails with Lemlist, as the platform offers multi-channel sequencing through calls, LinkedIn invites, LinkedIn messages, and way more.

A good example is the lemwarm feature, which helps boost your domain deliverability so you don't get into people's spam.

"Times of generic automation and being the fastest to send thousands of emails are long gone. What matters now is having a platform that makes your outreach feel human, that people actually read your message and that it doesn’t go to spam, as well as having the ability to communicate across different channels with ease, creating win-win deals in the process. 6. Userpilot

Category: Product adoption

What it'll do for you

Product-Led Growth is still not used effectively by most SaaS companies. Even larger enterprises don’t use in-app experiences enough to improve their product adoption, and push users for expansion revenue.

The main reason?

Product Analytics tools are notoriously hard to use, especially for Product Marketing Manager, who more and more often “own” user engagement metrics.

Fortunately, there’s an emerging trend of mid-term analytics, which are a lot easier and more agile to use for your product-led growth model.

Key features

Userpilot, for example, allows you to intentionally set adoption goals for your users and track feature use with a front-end selector, which makes it a lot easier to implement and to actually analyze the user behaviour data.

You can also jump on them immediately and create a relevant experience, rather than switch context between product analytics and product adoption tools.”

Plug-and-play

Userpilot's data can be sent to Google Analytics, Amplitude, Mixpanel, Heap, Intercom, Kissmetrics. Userpilot is also a destination in Segment.

Price

Userpilot's pricing is split in two feature tiers. The Growth plan is at $249/mo and the enterprise plan is at $749/mo.

10. Hubspot

Category: Marketing automation

What it'll do for you

I haven't mentioned CRMs in this list, because:

  1. Most product-led companies already have a CRM.
  2. Most CRMs on the market aren't fit for PLG.

However, I often see enterprise product-led companies use Hubspot for lead scoring and marketing automation.

That's why Hubspot is on this list in my opinion the best CRM for PLG.

It's of the most robust marketing automation platforms. Hubspot sequences help companies run complex sequences across their customer journey.

Key features

Hubspot workflows provide key flexibility when it comes to your sales funnel. Leads can be assigned to specific reps based on attributes, added to sequences if they engage with specific pages of your website, etc.

It's on Hubspot's enterprise plan that you truly unlock marketing automation power, like custom objects and behavioural event triggers. Those make a difference if you want to build world-class acquisition workflows.

Plug-and-play

Almost every SaaS has a Hubspot integration.

🎁 Bonus: Reprise

Category: Demos/Support

What it'll do for you

If you're an enterprise company, how can you let users experience your product before they request a demo with sales?

The answer is Reprise. It's used by high-growth SaaS like Pendo, Outreach, Zoominfo and Gainsight to share immersive product experiences with prospects, either directly on your website or in sales calls.

It's a newcomer in PLG sales and a great way to showcase your product to prospects without enabling free trials or freemium.

Key features

GTM teams can create interactive product tours and demos for specific verticals, personas, and use cases. Sales reps close more deals with customized demos instead of one-size-fits-all presentations.

Marketers can use Reprise to curate interactive product demos and sales data into blogs, articles and white papers. This way, content is tailored towards the audience and showcases the product way more efficiently than screenshots.

My favourite part of Reprise is its solid sandbox features, like insulating demo environments from downtime and anonymizing data shown in demos.

Price

You need to get a quote from sales to get Reprise's pricing, but expect a plan starting at $25k per year.

Conclusion

Obviously, there are other great tools out there for your product-led growth strategy!

But most of the content on PLG tools are empty lists that don't help the reader...

So I have this one actually helped you towards creating the very best go-to-market strategy for your product-led company.
